Kerala minister Saji Cherian claimed that the Constitution helps in usurping the wealth of people. The Governor has sought a response after the remarks triggered a row in the state.
Kerala Fisheries and Cultural Minister Saji Cherian on Tuesday courted controversy by claiming the Constitution helps in usurping the wealth of people.
"We all say that India has a beautifully written Constitution. But, I would say that the Constitution is written to rob most people of India. An Indian wrote a constitution which was prepared by the British. It has been practised in this country for 75 years," Saji Cherian said, addressing a party program in Pathanamthitta district.
"Though there are traces of a few good things such as democracy and secularism in the Constitution, its aim is to exploit the common man," he added.
Stressing that workers’ rights are not protected in India, Cherian said, "India is a country that does not accept labour protest. If anyone asks for wages, they would be beaten up. India has one of the most accepted Constitutions for exploitation."
"The poor man is exploited by using the surplus value obtained from his labour. Is the Constitution of this country protecting labourers when they work from 8-20 hours," he added.
The statement has sparked controversy with Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan seeking an explanation from the CPI(M) leader. The Governor directed the Chief Secretary to produce the video of the statement. The governor will check whether the minister's statement violates the Constitution. After examining the speech, a report will be given to the President.
Congress MLA and Opposition leader VD Satheesan has demanded Cherian's resignation and warned of legal action if he refuses to step down.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

India's original Dhurandhar, Ravindra Kaushik, rose from acting at college theatres, to infiltrating the Pakistan Army as a RAW Agent. He provided critical intelligence on Pakistani troop movements and the country's nuclear programme, but died a lonely death after his betrayal and subsequent capture by the ISI.
