K. Sudhakaran returns to Kannur to ensure Congress victory, while T.O. Mohanan prepares to launch his campaign.
Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran returned to Kannur early on Friday (March 20, 2026) after days of political uncertainty, signalling his acceptance of the party’s decision ahead of the Assembly elections in Kerala.
Mr. Sudhakaran, who had earlier maintained a firm stand on contesting the polls, said his “priority now is to ensure the party’s victory and bring it to power”. His return comes after prolonged speculation and internal deliberations within the party over candidature.
Hundreds of party workers gathered at Kannur airport in the early hours to receive him, waiting through the night to accord him a warm welcome. Despite the enthusiastic reception, Mr. Sudhakaran declined to speak to the media, citing fatigue upon arrival. The development is expected to ease tensions within the party in the district following days of visible dissent and uncertainty over seat allocation.
Meanwhile, T.O Mohanan, who has been nominated as the Congress candidate in Kannur constituency, is set to begin his campaign.
People close to him said that he will meet prominent leaders today (Friday), including Mr. Sudhakaran in the evening for his “blessings and support”, before commencing his campaign.
