Kanpur: Notice to over 40 families to vacate enemy properties

Sale and purchase of enemy properties has been banned since 2017 when the government amended the related laws to declare itself the owner of all such properties.

The Kanpur district administration has started a crackdown against those who have occupied enemy properties for many years. Following the instructions by the central government, the district administration has started serving notices to vacate enemy properties.

Evacuation notices have been served to over 40 families and still many more occupiers are yet to be served, said ADM City, Atul Kumar.

The movable and immovable assets left behind by people who left India after the Indo-China war of 1962 and the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971, are known as enemy properties. The central government declared itself the owner of all such properties by amending the law related to enemy properties in 2017.

Since then, the sale or purchase of enemy property has been banned in the entire country. Work has been started to clear 12 enemy properties in the district.

After the completion of the notice giving process, preparations have also been made for a special drive to get the evacuation done.

Meanwhile, many people went to court and the matter went into cold storage. But recently, joint secretary, MHA, Saurabh Ray visited Kanpur and surveyed the enemy properties.

So far, 12 enemy properties have been declared in the records of the administration, while the proposal for declaring three has been sent to the central government. Now the exercise has started to remove the people occupying these three properties.
