A marriage in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district ended within hours after a woman walked into a police station the morning after her wedding and declared that she wanted to live with her lover instead of her husband.

There, she told officers the marriage had been forced on her by family pressure and that she intended to live with her lover instead.
Police called both families to the station and held counselling sessions for several hours.
Despite efforts at reconciliation, the woman stood firm. The groom told police he had been unaware of any prior relationship and said the marriage would never have taken place had he known her wishes earlier.
With no possibility of cohabitation, both sides agreed to separate by mutual consent the same day.
