The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has initiated an investigation into the clashes that broke out between two groups of students on campus, allegedly over non-vegetarian food being served in the mess on Ram Navami.
The administration has sought a report from the hostel’s warden and security staff regarding the incident. Students’ statements will also be included in the report.
Strict action will be taken against students found guilty of violating rules, the University said.
Police lodged an FIR after receiving a complaint from the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) and All India Students Association (AISA) against unknown members of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Six people were injured in the scuffle that erupted after ABVP students allegedly stopped other left-leaning students from eating non-vegetarian food on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Ram Navami. The two groups, however, claimed that over 60 students were injured from both sides.
The JNUSU alleged that the ABVP used "muscle power and goondaism" to create a ruckus, manhandled the mess staff and asked them not to prepare any non-vegetarian items. The right-wing students’ outfit, on the other hand, has alleged that Leftist students disrupted Ram Navami prayers at the Kaveri Hostel.
Several purported videos of the violence surfaced on social media, with one clip showing a woman student bleeding profusely from the head. India Today could not independently verify the videos.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

India's original Dhurandhar, Ravindra Kaushik, rose from acting at college theatres, to infiltrating the Pakistan Army as a RAW Agent. He provided critical intelligence on Pakistani troop movements and the country's nuclear programme, but died a lonely death after his betrayal and subsequent capture by the ISI.
