Jharkhand High Court has rejected Rahul Gandhi’s plea to quash a defamation case. Advocate Pradeep Modi had filed a case claiming that Rahul Gandhi's remark during an election campaign hurt sentiments.
The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday rejected a petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to quash a defamation case against him. The former Congress chief had moved the high court against an order of a lower court.
A complaint was filed by advocate Pradeep Modi in the Ranchi District Court against Rahul Gandhi after he had made a remark in one of his meetings during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaigns in the capital.
He had allegedly said, “All people with Modi as their surnames are thieves”, pointing to the scams committed by Neerav Modi and Lalit Modi. Alleging the statement had hurt sentiments, advocate Pradeep Modi filed a case for criminal defamation against the Congress leader.

On Tuesday, a bench led by Justice SK Dwivedi heard the matter at length and dismissed Rahul Gandhi's petition.
Rahul Gandhi had sought suspension of the suo motto cognizance taken against him by the lower court and set aside the proceedings started by the lower court. He also faces a separate Rs 20 crore defamation suit in the same matter.
Jharkhand High Court had earlier granted relief from coercive action for his alleged controversial remarks.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
