Jewellery worth over Rs 12 crore seized in Bhubaneswar from Mumbai-bound train

Gold ornaments weighing 32 kg were seized from four people who arrived in Bhubaneswar from Mumbai on the Konark Express.
Gold jewellery worth Rs 12 crore and weighing 32 kg was seized by the Government Railway Police (GRP) from passengers who travelled to Bhubaneswar from Mumbai on the Konark Express on Wednesday. Four people were detained.
The four, travelling from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar, were carrying a bag each containing 8 kgs of gold jewellery and were unable to produce valid documents to the police.
The Income Tax Department and the GST team have initiated an investigation to ascertain where the accused, identified as Hasmukhlal Jain, Surseh Sahadev Khare, Mahesh Bhomsar and Deepak Patel, got the jewellery from and where they were travelling to.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Khurda Road Zone (GRP), Chandrasekhar Sahu said, “It is a case of Tax Evasion. So, we reported this matter to the GST Department and Income Tax Department. The officials from GST are verifying documents and probing the case.”
In another case, the police confiscated fake currency notes from Bhubaneswar on Wednesday with a face value of over Rs 7 lakh and arrested two people.
The police also recovered a laptop, colour printer and other accessories used to manufacture the counterfeit currency notes.
