Jail officials should ensure dignity of prisoners: CM

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasizes dignity, confidence, and rehabilitation for prisoners, pushing for comprehensive jail reforms.

Jail officials should be able to ensure the dignity of prisoners and increase their confidence, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

At the State jail advisory committee meeting held on Saturday, the Chief Minister said the atmosphere in jails should be devoid of physical assaults, fear, anxiety, exploitation, and emotional stress. Those released from jail should be able to live in society without facing any discrimination.

The State government, he said, was committed to bring about jail reforms. Instructions have been given on building jail structures equipped with more modern facilities. More attention should be given to treatment facilities for inmates. Mental health and counselling should also be made more comprehensive. Directions to revamp recreational facilities in jails would be examined, he added.

It has been decided to provide inmates educational and skill training opportunities. Many more recommendations were under government consideration, he said.
