J&K: CRPF flags spike in local recruitment in terror groups in 2 years

There has been a sharp spike in local recruitment in terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir over the past two years.

The Central Reserve Police Force has raised concerns over the rise in local recruitment in terror ranks in Jammu and Kashmir. According to CRPF officials, local recruitment in terror ranks has swelled up exponentially over the past two years in J&K. The rise may be up by as much as 60 per cent, especially in parts of South Kashmir.

As per sources, this year alone, the number of locals recruits who joined terror ranks stands at 28. The figures may give a different picture, but sources say that there is a calculation that the local terrorists have grown.

Similarly, the number of foreign terrorists has also increased significantly. Presently, as many as 163 terrorists are active in Jammu and Kashmir. Of these, 85 are foreign terrorists.

The local recruitment in terror groups witnessed a decline in 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5 that year.

As per security forces, a total 71 terrorists have been killed this year. Speaking to India Today, CRPF sources said that this is a cause of concern for them.
