The former Supreme Leader of Iran was killed on February 28, 2026, in Israeli strikes, creating a vacuum in the political leadership of Iran. Khamenei became the Supreme Leader of the country in 1989, after the revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini’s death. He was the commander-in-chief, with the final say on all policy and religious matters. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) answered personally to him.
Ali Shamkhani, a long-serving and highly influential figure in Iran, was reportedly killed on February 28, 2026, in Israeli airstrikes.
