Inuvialuit Regional Corporation elects new chairperson in Erwin Elias
CBC
Directors with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) have elected a new chairperson: Erwin Elias, the former mayor of Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T.
The election process began with a forum in Inuvik on Tuesday afternoon, where seven candidates made their case for the job.
Voting began afterward in a round of run-offs where one candidate needed to win at least 50 per cent of votes. The voting was done by the corporation's 42 directors.
If no 50 per cent winner emerged, the candidate with the fewest votes would be taken off the list for the next round of voting.
The voting went down to a final round between two candidates from Tuktoyaktuk: Elias and Lucy Kuptana.
The forum and voting were done behind closed doors but the proceedings were broadcast live, with 600 people tuning in. More than a dozen others gathered at a watch party at the IRC headquarters in Inuvik.
