Leading airlines have written to the government seeking changes to proposed cabin crew fatigue rules, warning that the new norms could disrupt flight schedules and affect long-term growth, reported news agency Reuters.
The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) has asked the government to dilute parts of the draft rules. The industry body represents IndiGo and Air India, and has raised concerns that the changes may create operational and cost pressures.
The pushback comes months after IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, cancelled around 4,500 flights in December. The cancellations were linked to poor planning related to new fatigue management rules for pilots.
The draft cabin crew rules were proposed in October. They seek to increase the minimum weekly rest period for cabin crew to 48 hours from the current 36 hours. The proposal also expands work limits for night operations.
Another key change is the requirement that each cabin crew member be given a separate hotel room during layovers to improve rest quality.
Although single-room accommodation is not mandatory under international aviation rules, many airlines outside India follow this practice. However, it increases costs.
