India captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her happiness at winning the first ODI against England on Sunday and said that the players showed character during the match. Kaur also had special praise reserved for Mandhana and Bhatia's partnership.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her happiness with the team's win over England on Sunday, saying that all the players showed character during the match.

After winning the toss, Kaur put the England team into bat and the decision proved to be a masterstroke as the Indian bowlers kept the scoring under control.

Veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami was right on the money and received support from the likes of Meghna Singh and others as the hosts were restricted to just 227 runs in the allotted 50 overs.

In reply, India lost Shefali Verma early but Smriti Mandhana and Yastika Bhatia put on a brilliant partnership to set the team up for the win. Mandhana scored a fine 91 and Kaur remained unbeaten on 74 as India secured the game with seven wickets to spare.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, as quoted by Cricinfo, the India captain said that she was happy with the support and the win and said that the players showed character.

"We're happy with the support and the win. All of us showed the character which we discussed in team meetings. (On the new ball) It was a crucial toss, the partnership between Jhulan and Meghna was great. Credit to all the bowlers as they chipped through," said Kaur.
