In a first, BBMP classifies several street vending spaces in Bengaluru as heritage

For the first time, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has categorised vending zones across the city during its survey to identify street vendors, and several markets have been designated as heritage sites.
As per the draft survey report accessed by The Hindu, markets have been classified into seven categories — Heritage Market, Natural Market, Bus Stand, Platform, Footpath, Weekly Market, and Others.
According to data from the South Zone, Kalasipalya Market, Gandhi Bazaar, V.V. Puram, Vijayanagar (various service roads and main roads), Byatarayanapura, Cholurpalya (1st Cross, 2nd Cross, Main Road), Manjunath Nagar (5th Cross), and Kadirenahalli have been designated as heritage markets. While the BBMP has not disclosed data for other zones, an official stated that at least five locations in each zone have been marked as heritage markets.
The survey was conducted using the ‘Street Vendors Survey’ mobile application. Unlike the 2017 survey, the latest report includes a separate column specifying the type of market in addition to the vending location.
The BBMP has completed a survey in eight zones and handed over the reports to the respective Zonal Town Vending Committees (TVCs). The TVCs will scrutinise the data based on objections raised by vendors. However, the scrutiny process for the South Zone has been put on hold as the BBMP has extended the objection period until March 3.
BBMP Special Commissioner (Welfare) Suralkar Vikas Kishor told The Hindu that the classification was determined by enumerators based on field observations. For instance, if vendors were found operating near a century-old temple, a historical market, or a 100-year-old building, the area was designated as a heritage market. While there are no standardised guidelines for granting heritage status to a location, the enumerators made these classifications based on historical and traditional significance.
However, those identified as Heritage Markets will not enjoy any special privilege.
