An ICE officer was also injured in the Chicago-area incident.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot and killed a man during an attempted vehicle stop in the Chicago area Friday morning.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that one of the ICE officers was hit by the car and dragged “a significant distance,” and is in stable condition after suffering multiple injuries.
According to CBS News immigration reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez, the incident occurred in Franklin Park, about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago.
DHS claimed the man, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, had a history of reckless driving, and that during the stop, “the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm and struck the subject.”
The shooting happened less than a week into increased ICE operations in the Chicago area, which it’s termed “Operation Midway Blitz.”
