Hyderabad fast emerging as GCC hub: IT Secretary 

Hyderabad emerging as a hub for global capability centres of leading firms and the importance of building on the momentum, especially with an estimated 800 GCCs planned to be set up in the country, were highlighted by speakers at the CII Telangana IT Conclave 2024 here on Wednesday.

Almost 10% or around 200 of the more than 2,000 GCCs in India are located in Hyderabad. Talent availability plays a major role in attracting such facilities and in the last three years, and Hyderabad had attracted the largest number of GCCs in the country, Special Chief Secretary-IT and Industries Jayesh Ranjan told the conference that had ‘Unleashing the Potential for GCCs’ as its theme.

While the disciplined workforce focused on delivering results is a big advantage, something that also drew appreciation from global firms with GCCs during the COVID-19 period, there were certain challenges that need be addressed. Attrition is one, something the consortium of Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) industry GCCs has already got down to address by enhancing skill set of the students and thereby ensuring a steady supply of trained manpower.

Mr. Ranjan also underscored the need to promote tier-2 and tier-3 cities, in the State, as industrial hubs, CII Telangana said in a release on the conclave. Hyderabad is home to GCCs of companies in the BFSI, Life Sciences, Automotive, FMCG, Logistics and Animation and Gaming sectors. There is a need to work together to achieve competitive advantage, he said.

“We believe the best way to grow is grow together and the entire GCC ecosystem is working together as one team. Around 800 GCCs are planning to set up their operations in India and Hyderabad need to gear up to attract maximum number of them,” said Ramesh Kaza, senior MD, Country Head IT India, Strategy and Transformation – International CIO, State Street Bank & Trust.

BFSI programme

Through the BFSI Consortium a few major companies have come together to provide curriculum, content and coaching to train 10,000 students every year. The programme is expected to commence operations from January 2025 in 20 engineering colleges. BFSI Consortium may become a path breaking intervention in the long run in the all important area of skill development, he said.
