Hwy 1 reopens to eastbound traffic near Banff after sinkhole caused diversion

Traffic has resumed on Highway 1 after a sinkhole closed a stretch into the road and diverted traffic into the Town of Banff.
In an update Thursday evening, Banff National Park said Highway 1 is now reopened to eastbound traffic, but travellers should still expect some delays.
Earlier in the day the Town of Banff said the sinkhole had caused all eastbound highway traffic to be detoured at Norquay Road.
Alberta 511 said on social media that westbound highway traffic in the area is now two lane travel, and the eastbound lanes remain closed due to the sinkhole.
The town said the sinkhole in the eastbound lanes is about seven metres long and two metres wide. Parks Canada crews, Standish Towing, RCMP and Town of Banff Municipal Enforcement helped detour traffic through town at all main intersections.
The RCMP and Alberta 511 also said drivers should expect delays.
