
How Gupta Brothers of Saharanpur caused turmoil in South Africa

The Gupta Brothers were once so influential that it was alleged that they decided the policies of ex-President Jacob Zuma government in South Africa.
South Africa is in the grips of widespread violence since the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma in connection with allegations of corruption. The corruption charges against Jacob Zuma have an Indian connection — the Gupta Brothers, who had moved from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur to South Africa in 1990s. Jacob Zuma is in jail serving 15-month jail term for contempt of court. Jacob Zuma had refused to comply with a court order passed in February directing him to present documents or evidence before an inquiry panel led by South Africa’s Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
