Hariprasad's controversial remarks spark uproar in Legislative Council, leading to protests and calls for his suspension.
Proceedings of the Legislative Council were disrupted for the third consecutive day on Thursday over the controversy surrounding the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, with the Opposition continuing its protest in the well of the House. A remark made by Congress member B.K. Hariprasad during the heated exchange of words triggered sharp confrontations, prompting the BJP and the JD(S) to demand his suspension.
The disorder began with the Opposition persisting with its protest, demanding that Leader of the House N.S. Boseraju express regret for his criticism of the Governor’s address, even as the government moved the motion of thanks. As soon as the House assembled, BJP members continued their dharna, prompting Chairman Basavaraj Horatti to appeal for the withdrawal of the protest.
Leader of the Opposition Chalavadi Narayanswamy said the Floor Leader’s criticism of the Governor’s address, followed by the presentation of the motion of thanks, reflected a contradictory stand and sent a wrong message. He said the protest would be withdrawn if Mr. Boseraju expressed regret.
Responding, Mr. Boseraju said the government had welcomed the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address. Not satisfied with the reply, the Opposition continued the protest. Mr. Horatti intervened, stating that once the government had clarified its stand, the matter should be considered settled. This was contested by Mr. Narayanswamy, who questioned the Chairman’s interpretation.
Amid the heated exchanges, Mr. Hariprasad said there was no need to take lessons on the Constitution from the BJP, alleging that the party leader had torn up the rule book governing the House. BJP member D.S. Arun alleged that Mr. Hariprasad had shown disrespect to the Governor. In a sharp response, Mr. Hariprasad made a remark that further escalated tensions.
Taking strong exception to the statement, Opposition members demanded Mr. Hariprasad’s suspension, alleging improper conduct towards the Governor and the use of objectionable words in the House. As the situation went out of control, the House was adjourned for some time.
