Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar outlines plans for "Greater Bengaluru" with focus on cleanliness, waste management, and infrastructure development.
Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who inspected several ongoing civic works in the city and laid foundation for many on Monday, said “Greater Bengaluru” will come into existence over the next two-three days and that will be the beginning of several reforms in the city. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024 is set to come into force from May 15.
“A major cleanliness campaign will follow immediately after Greater Bengaluru is established. Citizens will be able to report garbage dumping via a helpline, and the municipality will ensure quick response,” he said. This is part of a broader goal to create a “Clean Bengaluru” by combating illegal garbage disposal mafias and streamlining waste management.
He further said that following the recent High Court of Karnataka order that has allowed the government to call new tenders for waste disposal within four months, new tenders for Integrated Waste Management will be called soon. “We have found evidence of a few people sitting in one house and submitting multiple tenders. They even complained to the opposition. Even now, they are trying to employ different strategies. But we are committed to clean governance and building a cleaner Bengaluru,” he said.
Later in the day, during a site inspection of white-topping road works in Bengaluru, Mr. Shivakumar emphasised quality and durability. “The white topped roads must last at least 30 years. I inspect works randomly, not just at locations chosen by officials. I get down at the locations I choose, and personally examine the quality. During today’s inspection, I noticed that the road thickness is just half a foot and asked officials to rectify the same,” he said.
With monsoon season approaching, he stressed preparedness, assuring citizens that both officials and Ministers are on alert to prevent flood-like situations.
He acknowledged that progress won’t come overnight but assured that changes will occur phase by phase—through tunnels, underpasses, and better connectivity.
Speaking at a foundation-laying event for a 4 MLD (million litres per day) capacity water treatment plant in Pulikeshinagar Assembly constituency, Mr. Shivakumar announced an investment of over ₹1,100 crore in the constituency for roads, flyovers, and ward development, alongside digital property documentation services delivered to citizens’ doorsteps.
