Dinesh Gundu Rao aims to introduce strict legislation against hate speech and crimes, emphasizing impartial administration for societal peace.
Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday, said he will discuss with the Chief Minister to bring in a stringent legislation to curb hate speech and such other related crimes during the next legislature session.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to Dakshina Kannada district here, Mr. Rao admitted that there was need to strengthen the law against hate speeches as well as hate social media posts. Unfortunately, people engaging in such activities would easily come out on bail under the present legislation, he noted.
Hate speeches were delivered by senior political leaders, he said adding elected representatives in the district as well as leaders like Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal were known to deliver inciting addresses. Though the police registered first information reports against those making hate speeches, the speakers would get enlarged on bail easily.
Those spreading hate messages on social media platforms too have backing from political leaders and organisations. The government has therefore constituted a special action force to contain communal crimes in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Shivamogga districts, Mr. Rao said.
Reviewing the law and order situation in the district at a meeting of senior police officers at the Police Commissioner’s office later, Mr. Rao said the new heads of the city and the district police, who were known for their capabilities, now have the increased responsibility in the sensitive district.
Stressing the need for peace in society for the overall growth of the region, Mr. Rao said everyone expects from the government an impartial administration. The government was committed to ensure maintenance of law and order. Regretting political interference in maintaining law and order, the Minister said there should be no such interference. “The administration should be carried out as per law and I have instructed the officers to work fearlessly,” Mr. Rao said.
MLCs Manjunatha Bhandary and Ivan D’Souza and others were present.
