The Puducherry government is committed to providing 50 acres to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) for establishing an Advanced Trauma Care and Organ Transplantation Centre in Puducherry, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan said on Saturday (February 7, 2026).
“The Puducherry government is taking the initiative to provide 50 acres of land to JIPMER to establish the centre, and we hope that the Prime Minister [Narendra Modi], during his proposed visit to Puducherry, makes an announcement on the establishment of the centre at Sedarapet village. JIPMER’s proposal is to establish the centre at a cost of around ₹1,100 crore,” Mr. Kailashnathan said while participating in the inaugural of the International Summit on Advanced Trauma Care organised by JIPMER.
As the Administrator of the Union Territory (UT), the Lt. Governor said he was happy to state that Puducherry was steadily emerging as a national and international health hub, with JIPMER standing tall as a premier institution. The institute has earned global recognition for its quality treatment, attracting patients from across the country and abroad, he added.
“Recognising the immense potential of Puducherry, the government has planned to promote the territory as a major health centre. Efforts are on to enhance air, rail, and road connectivity. The integrated effort will ensure seamless access, affordable treatment, and comprehensive healthcare, transforming Puducherry into a model health and wellness destination,” the Lt. Governor said.
Touching upon the importance of trauma care in the context of the country accounting for 10% to 11% of the global road traffic deaths, he said the concept of Basic Life Support System should be compulsorily in schools and colleges so that every citizen becomes potential life savers. Besides, the concept of Advanced Trauma Life Support System should be made compulsory in MBBS and other undergraduate programmes, he added.
Expressing concern about the rising number of accident cases in Puducherry, the Lt. Governor said the UT recorded 1,445 road accidents, resulting in the death of 216 persons and causing injury to 1, 500 persons in 2024.
