GOP Senator Spills On The Illegal Measure He Takes To Deal With DC Crime Fears

Sen. Markwayne Mullin said he's totally "not joking" about this bonkers driving habit.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) on Wednesday revealed that he doesn’t wear a seat belt while driving his vehicle in Washington, D.C. — a move that’s against the law in the nation’s capital — as he fears he’ll be a victim of a carjacking.
Mullin told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade that “car theft” in D.C. was three times higher than that of the average state (the claim appears to hold up to vehicle theft rates tracked by state in 2023 although this is separate from “carjacking,” which involves violence or the threat of violence. The amount of carjacking in D.C. appears to be on its way down since a spike in 2023.)
Mullin went on to stress that he’s “not joking” about riding around in his Jeep without buckling up.
“And the reason why I don’t buckle up — and people can say whatever they want to, they can raise their eyebrows at me, again — is because of carjacking,” he said.
“I don’t want to be stuck in my vehicle when I need to exit in a hurry because I got a seat belt around me. And I wear my seat belt all the time but in Washington, D.C., I do not because it is so prevalent of carjacking.”
