A three-and-a-half-year-old girl was left severely traumatised after her preschool teacher forced her into a cupboard as punishment.
A shocking case of alleged child abuse has surfaced at a preschool in Kolkata’s Salt Lake, where a three-and-a-half-year-old girl was stuffed inside a dark cupboard as a form of “punishment.” The February 20 incident has triggered outrage, a police complaint, and a probe by the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR).
According to a formal complaint filed by the child’s father, two teachers, identified as Sayita Karmakar and Indira Das, forcibly pushed the child into a cupboard or box and blocked the opening with a heavy table to prevent her from coming out.
The entire ordeal was captured on the school’s CCTV cameras. After repeated requests and deliberations, the child’s mother was allowed to view the footage, which confirmed the family’s fears.
The video shows one of the teachers dragging the child into an empty classroom and making her sit in a corner. The teacher then pulls a table close to where the girl is seated and is seen forcing the child into a cupboard. Another teacher enters the classroom and calmly drinks water as she watches the scene without intervening. She is later seen assisting in forcing the child into the cupboard, while the first teacher pushes the table against it to block the child from getting out. The ordeal continues for several seconds before the teacher removes the table, allowing the child to step out.
The ordeal left the child with severe trauma.
A clinical observation report from the University of Calcutta’s Clinical Psychology Centre has flagged serious impact on the child’s mental health. The toddler is reportedly suffering from severe emotional trauma, irritability and sleep disturbances, and now refuses to attend school or face the teachers involved.
