Puducherry Civil Supplies Minister P.R.N Thirumurugan narrowly escaped when a footbridge collapsed moments after he crossed it during a midnight inspection of rain-affected areas in Karaikal.
Continuous heavy rain over the past three days had caused severe waterlogging in low-lying areas of Karaikal. Rainwater from surrounding regions had been gushing towards the Arasalar, intensifying flood conditions. In Thirunallar, breaches on riverbanks have led to water entering residential areas, displacing families.
Mr. Thirumurugan visited the affected areas late on Friday night to assess the situation, address grievances, and oversee evacuation efforts. While crossing a small footbridge that connected Ozhiyapathu and Athippadugai in Thirunallar commune, to reach the embankment, the connecting portion of the bridge was swept away in the current moments after he passed. Fortunately, the Minister escaped unhurt, leaving his aides and officials stunned.
Authorities later inspected the bridge site, but another section of the bridge collapsed, deepening public fears. Mr. Thirumurugan continued his inspection of waterlogged homes and assured residents that the district administration had intensified precautionary measures to minimise damage and assist affected families. Official sources said they would soon be repairing the bridge after a detailed inspection from the Public Works Department.
