Fireworks accident at temple in Kerala’s Kannur injures five

Five injured in fireworks accident at Theyyam festival in Kerala, sparking safety concerns at temple events.
Five people, including a 12-year-old child, were injured in a fireworks accident during a Theyyam festival at Neerkadavu Muchiriyan temple at Azhikode in Kannur district of Kerala early on Friday (February 21, 2025). The mishap occurred around 4 a.m. when a firecracker fell from above and exploded among the crowd.
Among the injured, one person sustained critical injuries and has been shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru. Three others suffered serious wounds.
The accident happened during the 10th Theyyam performance of the festival which had drawn a large crowd of devotees and spectators.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and safety measures at temple festivals are likely to come under scrutiny following the accident.
In a similar incident on October 29, 2024 at Anjoottambalam Veerarkavu temple in Neeleswaram, Kasaragod, about 154 people were injured and later six people succumbed to the injuries when fireworks outside a storeroom were ignited, triggering an explosion inside where a large quantity of firecrackers was kept.
