Explained: The basis on which govt is claiming Mehul Choksi is an Indian citizen

India Today spoke to top officials on the basis of which India is claiming that Mehul Choksi, who was awarded Antiguan citizenship in November 2017, is an Indian national. 

The government has claimed that Mehul Choksi, the prime accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank fraud case, is an Indian national and not a citizen of Antigua as claimed by the fugitive businessman. India Today spoke to top officials who are aware of the developments on the basis of which India is claiming that Mehul Choksi, who was awarded Antiguan citizenship in November 2017, is an Indian national. Mehul Choksi applied for Antiguan citizenship based on a character report from Mumbai Police in May 2017. It has been alleged that Mehul Choksi did not disclose before the Mumbai Police authorities that he had cases registered against him in several courts. Due to this, Mumbai Police gave him an all-clear report, certifying that he was a good citizen with no criminal cases against him.
