Illinois' Jim Edgar had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar (R) died Sunday at age 79 from complications related to his treatment for pancreatic cancer, his family announced.
“We are deeply grateful for the love, support, and kindness so many have shown to Jim and our family over these last several months,” relatives said in a statement.
A moderate Republican, Edgar served two terms as Illinois governor from 1991 to 1999. He previously held a seat in the Illinois House and was Illinois secretary of state throughout the 1980s.
Edgar broke with his party’s hard-right turn following the rise of Donald Trump.
Last year, he publicly backed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris over Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
