A 70-year-old woman was murdered in her Bengaluru home in the early hours of Thursday, allegedly by a man who owed her money, while her paralysed husband lay helpless beside her on the same bed.
According to police, the 33-year-old accused, Shivakumar, a wholesale shop owner, entered Shobha’s house at around 1 am on Thursday and killed her in an attempt to wipe out a Rs 8-lakh debt he owed her. He then searched the premises for cash and valuables before fleeing with nearly 450 grams of gold jewellery worth about Rs 65 lakh.
Police said the victim’s ailing husband, whom she cared for daily, was present in the same room when the crime took place. A video from the scene showed the woman lying in a pool of blood with her husband beside her on the same bed, while the television continued to play in the background.
In an apparent attempt to evade suspicion after the crime that police say was driven by debt and robbery, the accused even engaged with neighbours and locals gathered near the house after the incident.
Officials said the accused was tracked down and arrested within hours with the help of CCTV footage from Nelamangala area of Rural Bengaluru.
Police have since seized the motorcycle, knife and mobile phone allegedly used in the crime. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of elderly persons living in residential neighbourhoods, particularly those without adequate security arrangements.
