
Elderly couple set ablaze by ex-servicemen over 30 year old enmity in Thiruvananthapuram

An ex-serviceman killed an elderly couple by setting them ablaze in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. The accused also suffered 60 per cent burn injuries and was admitted to the hospital.
An ex-serviceman killed an elderly couple by hitting them on their heads with a hammer and later setting them on fire in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. According to the police, a 30-year-long desire to take revenge had led to the incident.
The victims, Prabhakara Kurup and his wife Vimala Kumari, succumbed to burn injuries at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college.
The incident took place on Saturday morning at around 11.30 am. The accused, identified as Sasidharan Nair, also suffered 60 per cent burns in the incident and has also been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital. Pallickal Police registered a case and began an investigation.
As per the police, when the incident took place, only the elderly couple were present in the house.
Sasidharan Nair's son died by suicide in Bahrain around thirty years ago. Kurup had helped Nair's son to go abroad, but he had not gotten the job he was looking for. This led to him being depressed and later taking his own life. Nair filed a complaint with the police, and Kurup was one of the accused in the case.
After the case was dragged on for many years, Kurup was acquitted by the court on Friday. Enraged over this, Nair decided to take revenge.
A heated argument on Saturday turned into a scuffle between Kurup and Nair. Vimala Kumari tried to rescue Kurup but Nair took out a hammer and hit them on the heads.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
