The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets of a Sri Lankan national who is accused of an assassination attempt on former Sri Lanka Prime Minister Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Property of a Sri Lankan national, who has been charged with an assassination attempt on former Sri Lanka Prime Minister Chandrika Kumaratunga, has been attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, officials said.
The attached assets include three immovable properties - a bungalow and two agricultural lands - in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvannamalai district belonging to Sri Lankan nationals Gunasekaran alias Perama Kumar and his son Dileep alias Thileep. The value of the attached assets is to the tune of Rs 33.7 lakh.
ED had initiated a money laundering case on the basis of FIR filed in November 2020 by the state police in which they had charged Gunasekaran, his son and few others under the Foreigners Act, Passports Act, NDPS Act, and certain sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused individuals had allegedly created and used fake identity cards such as PAN, Aadhar, and Driving Licenses over a period and stayed illegally in India.
“During the course of the investigation, it was found that Gunasekaran, A Suresh Raj, Mohamed Sherif and Raja Medura Gedara were involved in buying and selling of drugs covered under the NDPS Act, and for this crime, they were convicted by the Special Court in 2011. After the completion of their stay in the prison, they further changed their identity and generated proceeds of crime,” said the ED in a statement.
The properties attached by the ED were purchased after 2011 and the accused were allegedly not able to explain the source of funds used to buy these assets. The officials also found that the market value of these immovable properties is much higher than the value mentioned in the documents.
“The investigation further revealed that certain individuals were actively linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Accused Gunasekaran was charged of attacking former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Chandrika Kumaratunga.
