India Today
Panic gripped the capital after reports claimed that 807 people went missing in Delhi between January 1 and January 27 with 191 minors reported missing during this period, of whom only 48 have been traced.
Responding to concerns triggered by data showing hundreds of people reported missing in the first 27 days of 2026, the Delhi Police on Thursday said there was "no reason for panic or fear," particularly regarding cases involving children, and asserted that missing persons reports have not increased compared to previous years.
According to official data, 807 people were reported missing in Delhi between January 1 and January 27. Of these, 235 individuals have been traced so far, while 572 remain unaccounted for.
Children form a significant share of the missing population, with 191 minors reported missing during this period, of whom only 48 have been traced.
Amid rising public concern, the Delhi Police issued a detailed statement clarifying that January 2026 has, in fact, seen a decline in missing persons cases compared to the same period in earlier years.
"There is no increase in the reporting of missing persons in Delhi. On the contrary, a decrease has been recorded in January 2026," the police said in a statement on Thursday.
The police also stressed that Delhi follows a policy of "fair and transparent reporting," noting that missing persons reports can be filed not only at local police stations but also online and through the emergency response system ERSS-112.
