Deputy Commissioner H. V. Darshan on Thursday directed local bodies to keep their plans ready to manage drinking water crisis, if any, during the summer in Dakshina Kannada.
Presiding over the District Disaster Management Authority meeting on comprehensive drinking water management, the Deputy Commissioner said that the local bodies should ensure that people do not face dearth of drinking water. He asked the bodies to identify the water sources which can be tapped during crisis.
Mr. Darshan said that tankers should be used to supply water only if necessary. Local bodies should use the funds available with them to supply water in summer.
Mangaluru City Corporation officials told the meeting that as per the present estimate based on the storage of water in Thumbe vented dam, from where drinking water is supplied to the city, Mangaluru may not face dearth of drinking water this summer. They said that seven jack wells of various departments and industries are drawing water from Thumbe dam.
The Deputy Commissioner expressed his dissatisfaction over officials of the Rural Drinking Water Supply Department who did not provide adequate information in the meeting.
