D.C. Police Are Cozying Up To ICE Amid Trump’s Takeover

Washington D.C police are now cooperating with ICE in stark new ways amid President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s law enforcement.
In an executive order issued Thursday, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith announced that officers could share information about people who were not in custody — including individuals they encountered during traffic stops. Additionally, the order stated that the officers could provide transportation for federal immigration enforcement agents and people they detain.
These developments, which NBC Washington first reported, mark a significant shift from MPD’s prior approach and mean that officers can now report undocumented people who face no criminal charges and who aren’t in detention to ICE.
MPD’s policies have stated that officers “shall not assist ICE with arrest or transport of individuals solely based on ICE warrants or detainers.”
An MPD spokesperson told HuffPost that the order was a clarification and not a change in policy. “Under the President’s Executive Order, MPD services have been requested to assist ICE with transportation of detainees and traffic stops,” the spokesperson said.
