
Cyclone Asani weakens, Odisha districts on high alert as IMD warns of heavy rainfall

As cyclone Asani has weakened into a 'cyclonic storm', districts of Odisha have been put on high alert and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall. Around 60 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams have been deployed in districts of the state.
Several parts of Odisha are bracing for heavy rainfall as the severe cyclonic storm Asani has weakened into a 'cyclonic storm' and is likely to become a depression by Thursday morning. Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and sixteen other districts have been put on high alert and a heavy rainfall warning has been issued.
“It is very likely to move nearly northwards for next few hour and recurve slowly north-northeastwards along Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada, Tuni and Visakhapatnam coasts during noon to evening on Wednesday, and emerge into west central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coasts by night,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a bulletin.
The weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar districts in Odisha during the next three hours. Light showers have also been predicted for Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts, the Meteorological Centre said in its morning bulletin.

Odisha Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Kumar Jena said as many as 132 teams of Fire Service personnel have been deployed along with the 60 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams in the state.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
