Credit card fraud: Free-thali lure costs Mumbai man Rs 1 lakh

An elderly man from Mumbai lost Rs 1 lakh to fraudsters after he fell for an advertisement of 'free thalis' put out on Facebook.

A 74-year-old man from Mumbai was duped of nearly Rs 1 Lakh on his credit card after he fell prey to a hoax ad that promised two free thalis with a thali for Rs 100. The ad was even more convincing to him as it required advance payment of only Rs 10 by credit card. The remaining amount of Rs 90 would have had to be paid on delivery.

However, as he used his card to pay the initial Rs 10, his card was charged twice for Rs 49,760, reported The Times of India.

The victim, ND Nand, saw the ad on Facebook on January 19 and decided to avail of it.

After being defrauded, Nand lodged a complaint with the Khar police. In his complaint, Nand said, “A person identifying himself as Deepak attended the call and asked me to provide him with my credit card details to place the order. He told me that initially Rs 10 would be deducted and I had to pay Rs 90 in cash once the order was delivered. The person then asked me to share the one-time password that I received to complete the order.”

According to the police, Nand realised that he had been duped immediately after he transacted for the amount of Rs 10.
