Covishield-EU imbroglio: ‘I hope to resolve matter soon,’ says Serum CEO Adar Poonawalla

Amid concerns that Indian travellers who have taken the Covishield vaccine may not be eligible for the European Union’s (EU) ‘Green Pass’, Serum Institute of India (SII) Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla on Monday said he had already taken up the matter “at the highest levels” and hoped for an early resolution of the issue. Reassuring travellers from India to EU countries, the SII CEO said in a tweet: “I realise that a lot of Indians who have taken COVISHIELD are facing issues with travel to the EU. I assure everyone, I have taken this up at the highest levels and hope to resolve this matter soon, both with regulators and at a diplomatic level with countries.” The SII manufactures the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine (with a licence from AstraZeneca) under the brand name Covishield in India.The election authorities are gearing up for the counting of votes cast in the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled to be held on June 4. The Collectors and Election Officers of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts said on May 23 (Thursday) that their teams were ready for the counting of votes.
Responding to the prolonged water scarcity, the residents of the area took to the streets in protest on Wednesday. The protest, which drew attention to their plight, stopped only after the intervention of the police. It was not until 1.30 p.m. that a 4000-litre tanker was finally delivered by BWSSB, providing relief to the water-starved residents.
