As Covid-19 cases spike in India, southern states are reeling under the effects of the new variant Omicron. On January 5, Kerala reported 185 new cases of Omicron, the third highest in India followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka recording 121, 84 and 77 cases respectively. All these states have announced curbs such as night curfew, weekend curfew and other restrictions on events. All schools and colleges will also remain shut. Here are the major restrictions in each of the southern states.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.
