CWC member Ramesh Chennithala addresses controversy over Kerala CM candidate and participation in religious event.
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and MLA Ramesh Chennithala has said that the discussions over the chief ministerial candidate of the party in Kerala were ill-timed and that his participation in an event organised by Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama “need not be made into a big issue.”
Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode, Kerala, on Saturday (January 4, 2024), Mr. Chennithala said the Congress high command will make the decision regarding the chief ministerial candidate.
His participation in the Jamia Suriyya convention at Pattikkad in Malappuram district had triggered a controversy, especially since Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan was invited for the event, presided over by MLA and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader M.K. Muneer. Mr. Chennithala was set to inaugurate a session named ‘Garib Nawas’.
“The Congress maintains a good relationship with all religious and cultural organisations”, he said, adding that the Chief Minister had visited the headquarters of Jamaat-e-Islami and that he was not in a position to decide if the Jamaat was “a communal organisation” or not.
He, however, refused to comment on the recent row over wearing shirts inside Hindu temples, saying the decision lies with “religious organisations.”
