‘Complete failure’: Oppn parties hit out at Andhra govt after arson, protests over renaming of district

Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh have hit out at the state government over its 'failure' to control the law and order situation in Amalapuram on Tuesday.
After the law and order situation spiralled out of control in Amalapuram town of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, Opposition parties in the state have hit out at the ruling YSR Congress Party over a “complete failure” in taking control of the matter.
The state government, meanwhile, said some parties and anti-social elements instigated the violence.
On Tuesday, the homes of Andhra Pradesh transport minister Pinipe Viswarup and MLA P Satish were set ablaze by locals as tensions prevailed in Amalapuram town over the renaming of Konaseema district as Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Konaseema.
The situation deteriorated after the police lathi-charged people protesting against the proposed renaming of the district. Incensed, the protesters allegedly took to stone-pelting and arson. A number of police personnel were left injured.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were clamped in Amalapuram and additional police forces were rushed in to bring the situation under control.
The Telugu Desam Party, BJP, Jana Sena and the Congress hit out at the state government over its ‘failure’ in controlling the Amalapuram situation.
"The arson in Konaseema, known for its peace, is unfortunate This is completely a failure of the government and the police," Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu said in a statement.
