Rahul Gandhi said the Centre must set up a Covid compensation fund for the victims of Covid-19 and slammed the government saying compensation is not a free gift.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the Centre must set up a Covid compensation fund for the victims of Covid-19 and slammed the government saying compensation is not a free gift. Addressing a press conference, Rahul Gandhi said, “Compensation is not a free gift. Centre has earned Rs 4 lakh crore as taxes from people. There should be a Covid compensation fund.” The Centre had earlier told the Supreme Court that the ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh cannot be paid to the families of those who have died of Covid-19 as the finances of state governments and the Centre are under severe strain.
A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
