A class 10 student was beaten to death after he tried to intervene in an assault between a group of locals outside a government school in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, police said on Tuesday.
The 16-year-old had just finished a special class and was leaving the campus when he noticed an argument escalating into a physical attack on another boy known to him.
According to investigators, he stepped in to pacify the situation, but the assailants turned on him and struck him repeatedly, including blows to the chest.
He collapsed at the scene and was declared dead after being rushed to hospital.
The injured men he had tried to help is undergoing treatment, police said.
Superintendent of Police Nikhil said all those involved were minors from the same locality who had studied in the same nearby school. “They were known to each other. The victim intervened when a quarrel escalated, and he was assaulted. By the time he was taken to hospital, he had died,” the SP said.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
