
Child marriage: Mangaluru court sentences five persons to one year rigorous imprisonment

29-year-old Mohammed Imthiyaaz, his parents, and a minor girl's parents sentenced to one year imprisonment for child marriage.
The Additional District Sessions Judge, Fast Track Sessions Court-2, Mangaluru, has sentenced 29-year-old Mohammed Imthiyaaz — who married a minor girl — his parents and the girl’s parents to one year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of ₹25,000. They were found guilty of getting a child marriage done.
The Judge K.S. Maanu on December 13, 2024, sentenced Imthiyaaz, his parents K.A. Mohammed and Mymuna and the 17-year-old girl’s parents Abdul Khadar and Ramlath to one-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on each. Imthiyaaz was convicted for the offence punishable under Section 9 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. Mohammed, Mymuna, Abdul Khader and Ramlath were convicted for the offences punishable under Sections 10 and 11 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Imthiyaaz married the girl at the latter’s house in Ullal taluk, in the presence of his and the girl’s parents’ as well as other family members on May 31, 2023. The marriage reception was held on June 1, 2023. Following a complaint, the women police booked Imthiyaaz and five others under section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under Sections 9, 10 and 11 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
The judge acquitted Imthiyaaz of the offence under Section 6 of POSCO Act. Prosecutor Badarinath Nairy represented the prosecution in the case.
