The incident was reported from Maduravoyal in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The accused has been identified as Chandrasekar, a 55-year-old priest at the Gangaiamman Temple. He has been accused of molesting minors on two separate occasions.
The matter came to the fore when people discovered that a girl who stayed at the temple was sexually assaulted by the priest. On learning of this, the father of a girl who had also stayed at the temple in 2018 asked her if she had faced any issues.
To the man’s dismay, his daughter confessed that the priest had sexually assaulted her, and had threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the attack.
In 2018, when the girl was a Class 11 student, the priest had allegedly approached the family on the pretext of performing pooja to ward off evil spirits. The girl and the mother were made to stay in the temple premises for 15 days.
After his daughter confided in him, the agitated father sought out Chandrasekar and thrashed him. He was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai for treatment.
Based on the parents’ complaint, police lodged a case against the priest under POCSO Act, and went to the hospital to arrest. But by the time they arrived, Chandrasekar had fled.
