A 17-year-old student drowned in Chembarambakkam lake in Chennai on Saturday, September 3. The class 12th student, identified as Jagadeesan, was at the lake with two of his friends, Surya and Yuvraj.
Jagadeesan, who did not know how to swim, was sitting near the lake when his friend Surya called him to get into the lake.
Due to recent rains, the water level was very high in the Chembarambakkam lake and the public had been given a caution to be safe. However, Jagadeesan got into the lake but didn’t come up.
Surya tried to look for him but couldn’t find him and alerted the authorities finally. Poonamallee Fire and Rescue Service officials retrieved Jagadeesan’s body from the lake after several hours of search and handed it over to Kundrathur Police.
Meanwhile, Jagadeesan’s exact moment of drowning has been captured by his friend on mobile phone which has now gone viral.
The visual shows Surya asking Jagadeesan to get into water. Jagadeesan jumps and both go under the water’s surface but only Surya comes up. Panicked, Surya asks another friend Yuvraj to get in the water to help.
Further investigations are underway in the matter.
