Centre's Chandigarh move may intensify political tussle between AAP, BJP

The Home Ministry’s decision to introduce central service rules in Chandigarh has also prompted the ruling AAP in Punjab and other parties to raise the bogey of “federal structure” and an alleged violation of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966.

A stage has been set for the revival of a political tussle between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party amid a raging political battle among parties over the Centre’s decision to bring the employees of the Union Territory of Chandigarh under the central civil service rules.

“Central Govt has been stepwise imposing officers and personnel from other states and services in the Chandigarh administration. This goes against the letter and spirit of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966. Punjab will fight strongly for its rightful claim over Chandigarh,” Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said in a tweet.

Chandigarh, a Union Territory, serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

AAP spokesperson Malwinder Singh Kang accused the central government of trying to infringe upon Punjab's rights in Chandigarh.

The Home Ministry’s decision to introduce central service rules in Chandigarh has also prompted the ruling AAP in Punjab and other parties to raise the bogey of “federal structure” and an alleged violation of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966.

The BJP, meanwhile, targeted AAP for unnecessarily dragging the issue of the state capital.
