CBI arrests senior NHAI official on bribery charges

A senior NHAI official was arrested by the CBI on bribery charges on Friday. The official was attempting to take a bribe from a representative of a private firm in Gujarat when he was caught.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested a senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officer from Gujarat on bribery charges. The official was caught while attempting to receive a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a representative of a Mumbai-based private company, CBI officials said.
The officer has been identified as Digvijay Mishra, who is serving as NHAI’s Chief General Manager (Tech) and Regional Officer in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar. He was arrested along with TP Singh, a representative of the firm.
The CBI has also filed an FIR against both the accused along with a few others on the allegations that Digvijay Mishra and others were indulging in illegal activities in connivance with certain representatives of private companies working in NHAI Projects under his jurisdiction.

“It was further alleged that the company officials were in contact with the Regional Officer of NHAI (Digvijay Mishra), Gandhinagar for obtaining favours through illegal means specially in respect of their ongoing project Package-I (Ahmedabad-Dholera from KM 0.00 to KM 22.00), Package-II (Ahmedabad-Dholera from KM 22.00 to KM 48.52) and RE Wall (reinforced earth wall used for sustaining soil laterally so that it can be retained at different levels on both sides of the carriageway) as well as EOT (Extension of Time) matter of Package-III Construction (Ahmedabad-Dholera from KM 48.52 to KM 71.06),” CBI said in a statement.
