
CBI arrests Central Railway engineer in bribery case; Rs 60 lakh seized

An engineer associated with Central Railway has been arrested by the CBI for seeking and accepting a bribe of Rs 1.80 lakh.
The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) has arrested a Central Railway engineer from Maharashtra's Nagpur in connection with a bribery case. AB Chaturvedi, the engineer in question, is posted as Assistant Divisional Engineer (South) of Central Railways in Nagpur.
He was arrested on Friday on allegations of seeking and accepting a bribe of Rs 1.80 lakh from the complainant. Officials of the CBI also recovered Rs 60.62 lakh in cash, along with documents, during a search of the engineer's residence.
The case involving AB Chaturvedi was registered on the basis of a complaint. As per the complaint, the engineer had sought a bribe of Rs 1.80 lakh for clearing bills of the complainant's firm.

"It was further alleged that the said accused demanded the bribe @ 2 per cent of total bill of complainant's firm which was to the tune of Rs 89.55 lakh, pending with him," the CBI spokesperson said on Friday.
After receiving information about the engineer, CBI laid a trap and caught the accused while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 1.80 lakh from the complainant, officials said.
The accused will be produced before the competent court in Nagpur for custody in this case later today.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
