Cash seizure stands ₹41.98 crore so far

Tamil Nadu's Assembly election sees ₹41.98 crore in cash seized, along with liquor, drugs, and precious metals, amid strict monitoring.

Cash to the tune of ₹41.98 crore has been seized across Tamil Nadu, as on March 26, as surveillance teams deployed in all the Assembly constituencies continued to actively engage in the monitoring.

Liquor valued at ₹0.88 crore, drugs/narcotics valued at ₹7.24 crore and precious metals valued at ₹115.10 crore were seized till March 26, an official release said.

A total of 2,169 flying squads and 2,166 static surveillance teams were operating across the State to monitor and prevent unlawful movement of cash, liquor, and other inducements, it said. District-level grievance redressal committees have been established to facilitate the return of cash and other items seized by Flying Squads and Static Surveillance Teams upon submission of proper documents. Public are requested to approach these committees for redressal of their grievances related to seizures.

For the upcoming April 23 Assembly election, the Election Commission of India would set up 15 polling stations in highrise buildings/group housing societies. They would be in Maduravoyal constituency (Tamil Nadu All India Service Housing Association), two in Ambattur and one in Tiruvottiyur constituency in Tiruvallur district. In Chennai district, there would be six such stations in Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, Villivakkam, Virugampakkam and Velachery constituencies. In Kancheepuram district, there would be two -- one each in Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram constituencies and one each in Madurai (Madurai West) and Chengalpattu (Chengalpattu) districts.

Meanwhile, the last date for applying for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls to be able to vote in the April 23 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu ended on March 26. Officials said that there was time till midnight and the figures on the number of applications received for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls since the publication of the final electoral roll would be available later this week.
