Former Finance Minister T. Harish Rao refutes Congress's financial mismanagement allegations, highlighting Telangana's economic progress under BRS rule.
BRS MLA and former Finance Minister T. Harish Rao has strongly countered the Congress government’s allegations of financial mismanagement during their tenure. Participating in a short discussion on ‘Outstanding liabilities of the State’ in the Assembly on Thursday, he accused the ruling Congress of manipulating financial data to malign the BRS rule.
He said that Telangana was handed over to Congress as a surplus State with ₹1,700 crore in surplus budget. However, Congress allegedly misattributed ₹87,000 crore of inherited debt from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh to the BRS era and falsely claimed additional borrowings of ₹99,385 crore under BRS rule. He clarified that the actual debt incurred during their governance stood at ₹4.17 lakh crore, with ₹4.08 lakh crore invested in welfare initiatives, primarily benefiting farmers through schemes like Rythu Bandhu, irrigation projects, and free electricity subsidies.
Mr. Harish Rao dismissed Congress’s assertion of ₹6.71 lakh crore debt under BRS rule as deliberate misinformation. He also detailed Telangana’s economic progress under BRS, highlighting a budget increase from ₹68,000 crore in 2014 to ₹2.93 lakh crore in 2023, a rise in per capita income from ₹1.24 lakh to ₹3.56 lakh, and revenue surplus growth from ₹369 crore in 2014 to ₹5,994 crore in 2022-23.
Mr. Harish Rao demanded an open debate in the Assembly to address the allegations transparently. He said that Telangana’s people are aware of the BRS government’s contributions to the State’s growth and will not be misled by what he described as Congress’s false propaganda.
